Ingredients (in Grams)

For the Beef & Marinade

  • 250g flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

For the Lo Mein Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon grated ginger

For the Lo Mein

  • 250g lo mein noodles (or spaghetti as a substitute)
  • 150g broccoli florets
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned (about 60g)
  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced (about 50g)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 green onions, sliced for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Beef

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef, soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and black pepper. Toss well and let it marinate for 10 minutes while preparing the other ingredients.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Noodles & Vegetables

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the broccoli florets, julienned carrots, and bell pepper, and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: Cook the Beef

  1. In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and increase heat to high.
  2. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and cook for 2 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through.

Step 5: Combine Everything

  1. Reduce heat to medium and add the cooked noodles and vegetables back to the pan.
  2. Pour in the lo mein sauce and toss everything together until well coated. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until heated through.
  3. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Tips and Tricks

1. Best Beef for Lo Mein?

  • Flank steak or sirloin are great choices because they are tender and absorb marinades well.
  • Slice the beef against the grain for maximum tenderness.

2. Want Extra Flavor?

  • Add a splash of soy sauce at the end for an extra punch of umami.
  • Sprinkle with red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.

3. Can I Make This in Advance?

  • Yes! Cook the beef, vegetables, and sauce ahead of time and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet over medium heat before serving.

4. Can I Use Other Vegetables?

  • Absolutely! Try snap peas, mushrooms, zucchini, or baby bok choy for variety.
