Inspired by the classic Mongolian Beef, this chicken version is lighter yet just as flavorful. The sauce is a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and umami goodness, thanks to a combination of soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and garlic.

Plus, it’s super easy to make in just 30 minutes—perfect for weeknight dinners! Serve it over steamed rice, noodles, or stir-fried veggies for a complete meal.


Ingredients (in Grams)

For the Chicken:

  • 500g boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, sliced into thin strips
  • 30g cornstarch (for coating)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Mongolian Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons (30g) brown sugar or honey
  • 80ml low-sodium soy sauce
  • 60ml water
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) hoisin sauce (optional, for extra depth)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water (slurry for thickening)

For Garnish & Serving:

  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • Steamed white rice or noodles

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

  1. Slice the chicken into thin strips.
  2. In a bowl, toss the chicken with cornstarch, salt, and pepper until fully coated.

Step 2: Cook the Chicken

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a pan or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chicken strips in a single layer and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
  3. Remove the chicken and set aside.

Step 3: Make the Mongolian Sauce

  1. In the same pan, reduce heat to medium and add garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for 30 seconds.
  2. Pour in soy sauce, water, brown sugar, and hoisin sauce. Stir well.
  3. Mix the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch + water) and add it to the sauce.
  4. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, until thickened.

Step 4: Combine & Serve

  1. Return the crispy chicken to the pan and toss to coat in the glossy Mongolian sauce.
  2. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
  3. Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.
