Buttercream Icing for Cupcakes (Vanilla and Chocolate)

This simple and delicious buttercream icing is the perfect topping for cupcakes, cakes, or sugar cookies. With just 4 ingredients—salted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk—you can whip up a smooth, fluffy frosting in minutes. This recipe yields enough to frost 24 cupcakes or a 9×13 cake.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup salted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (confectioners)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (use clear vanilla for a pure white frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter with an electric hand mixer for 1 minute until smooth.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully combined.
  3. Add vanilla extract and milk, then mix on high speed for 2-3 minutes until the icing is fluffy and light.

Spread or pipe onto your favorite cupcakes, cakes, or cookies.

Notes:

  • Chocolate Frosting: Add 1 1/4 cups cocoa powder when mixing in the powdered sugar for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • Colored Frosting: Add 3-6 drops of food coloring when you add the milk to create vibrant shades of frosting.
