Cheese Bread

Cheese bread is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or serving alongside soups, stews, and pasta dishes. The combination of a buttery, golden crust and a soft, cheesy interior makes it an instant favorite. Plus, it can be customized with different cheeses, herbs, and even a hint of spice to suit your taste!


Ingredients (Makes 1 Loaf or 10 Rolls)

For the Dough:

  • All-purpose flour – 400g (3 ¼ cups)
  • Warm milk (about 43°C/110°F) – 240ml (1 cup)
  • Active dry yeast – 7g (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • Sugar – 25g (2 tablespoons)
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, melted – 60g (¼ cup)
  • Egg, beaten – 1

For the Cheese Filling:

  • Shredded cheddar cheese – 150g (1 ½ cups)
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese – 100g (1 cup)
  • Parmesan cheese, grated – 50g (½ cup)
  • Garlic powder – ½ teaspoon (optional)
  • Dried oregano or parsley – 1 teaspoon

For the Topping:

  • Egg yolk + 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • Extra shredded cheese (optional)
  • Butter (for brushing after baking)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter, beaten egg, and yeast mixture to the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the Bread

  1. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 1 cm thick).
  2. Evenly sprinkle the cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, garlic powder, and herbs over the dough.
  3. Roll the dough into a log (for a loaf) or cut it into small pieces for individual rolls.
  4. Place the shaped dough into a greased baking pan or loaf tin.

3. Second Rise & Bake

  1. Cover the dough and let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  3. Brush the dough with egg wash and sprinkle extra cheese on top.
  4. Bake for 25–30 minutes (for a loaf) or 15–18 minutes (for rolls) until golden brown and fully cooked.
  5. Brush with melted butter after baking for extra softness.
