For the Beef Marinade:

  • 450g (1 lb) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional, for sweetness)
  • ½ tbsp dark soy sauce (for rich color & depth)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp white pepper
  • ½ cup beef broth or water

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

How to Make Chinese Beef and Onion Stir-Fry

Step 1: Marinate the Beef

  1. In a bowl, combine thinly sliced beef, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, cornstarch, sesame oil, and baking soda (if using).
  2. Let it marinate for 15-20 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, dark soy sauce, cornstarch slurry, sugar, white pepper, and beef broth. Set aside.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Beef

  1. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a wok or large pan over high heat.
  2. Add the marinated beef and sear for 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: Stir-Fry the Onions & Aromatics

  1. In the same pan, add another tbsp of oil.
  2. Add sliced onions, cooking for 2-3 minutes until softened.

  1. Return the seared beef to the pan.
  2. Pour in the stir-fry sauce and mix well. Let simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
