  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or ½ cup milk + ½ tbsp vinegar, let sit for 5 minutes)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup hot coffee or hot water (enhances the chocolate flavor!)

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

How to Make Chocolate Craving Cake

Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch or 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add egg, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined.
  4. Pour in the hot coffee (or water) and whisk until smooth. The batter will be thin—this is normal!

Step 2: Bake the Cake

  1. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.

Step 3: Make the Chocolate Frosting

  1. In a medium bowl, beat butter until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until creamy.
  3. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake.
