Copycat Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings

December 30, 2024 by el hassan Leave a Comment

This Copycat Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings recipe brings home the warmth and coziness of the restaurant classic. Tender chicken and fluffy dumplings simmered in a rich, creamy broth make this the ultimate comfort food.

Ingredients

Chicken and Broth:

  • 1 ½ lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt

Dumplings:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Cook the Chicken:
    • In a large pot, combine chicken, chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender. Remove the chicken, shred it, and set aside. Keep the broth warm.
  2. Make the Dumplings:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add buttermilk, stirring until a dough forms. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut into 1×2-inch strips.
  3. Cook the Dumplings:
    • Bring the broth back to a gentle boil. Drop the dumplings into the simmering broth, stirring gently to prevent sticking. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10–12 minutes, or until the dumplings are tender.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Add the shredded chicken back to the pot and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes to warm through. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of dried thyme or parsley to the broth.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of broth or water if needed.
  • Use rotisserie chicken for a quick and easy shortcut!
