Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese

This creamy baked mac and cheese is the ultimate comfort food! Made with a rich, velvety cheese sauce and topped with a buttery breadcrumb crust, this dish is perfect as a side or main dish for any occasion. It’s easy to make and packed with cheesy goodness!


Ingredients

For the Mac and Cheese:

  • 1 lb elbow macaroni
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta: Boil the macaroni in salted water according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce:
    • In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden and bubbly.
    • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
    • Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar and Gruyere cheeses until melted and smooth.
  3. Combine: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Pour the mac and cheese into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  5. Prepare the Topping: In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, melted butter, and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle evenly over the mac and cheese.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the mac and cheese for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crispy.
  7. Serve: Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy hot!

Tips for Perfect Baked Mac and Cheese

  • Use Freshly Grated Cheese: Pre-shredded cheese contains additives that can affect melting, so grate your own for the creamiest sauce.
  • Customize Your Cheeses: Mix in mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or Parmesan for different flavor combinations.
  • Add Protein or Veggies: Stir in cooked bacon, chicken, or steamed broccoli for a heartier dish.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the mac and cheese (without baking) up to a day in advance. Cover and refrigerate, then bake just before serving.
