Creamy Smothered Chicken and Rice Recipe

Juicy, tender chicken breasts are pan-seared and then smothered in a rich, savory cream sauce loaded with garlic, onions, and herbs — all served over a bed of perfectly cooked rice.

This recipe is the kind of comforting classic your whole family will ask for again and again. It’s perfect for busy weeknights, cozy Sundays, or even when you want to impress with something hearty and homemade. And the best part? It all comes together in one pan with pantry-friendly ingredients!


Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Cream Sauce:

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional for extra richness)

For Serving:

  • 3 cups cooked white or brown rice
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

1. Season and Sear the Chicken

Pat chicken dry. Season both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and sear for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden and cooked through (internal temp should reach 165°F). Remove and set aside.

2. Make the Cream Sauce

In the same skillet, add chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Sprinkle flour over the onion and garlic, stirring to form a roux. Cook for 1 minute, then slowly whisk in chicken broth.

Pour in heavy cream and add thyme, parsley, and Parmesan cheese (if using). Simmer for 4–5 minutes until thick and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

3. Smother the Chicken

Return chicken to the skillet. Spoon sauce over the chicken and let everything simmer together for 2–3 minutes.

4. Serve Over Rice

Serve chicken and sauce over cooked rice. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and enjoy!
