This Chicken Bacon Ranch Tater Tot Casserole is the ultimate comfort food—crispy tater tots layered with creamy ranch-seasoned chicken, melty cheese, and smoky bacon. It’s a dump-and-bake, family-friendly dinner that’s simple to prepare and guaranteed to please even the pickiest eaters.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed
  • 1 packet (1 oz) ranch seasoning mix
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
  • 2 green onions, sliced (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix the Filling
In a large bowl, mix together the cooked chicken, ranch seasoning, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, 1½ cups of the shredded cheese, and half of the crumbled bacon.
  3. Assemble the Casserole
Spread the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange the tater tots in an even layer on top.
  4. Bake
Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden and crispy.
  5. Top & Finish Baking
Sprinkle the remaining cheese and bacon over the casserole. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5–7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
  6. Garnish & Serve
Let cool for a few minutes, then top with sliced green onions before serving, if desired.

Tips

  • Use rotisserie chicken to save time on prep.
  • Don’t thaw the tater tots—they crisp up better from frozen.
  • Pre-cook bacon until crispy for best texture and flavor.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving so it firms up nicely.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Protein options: Swap chicken with cooked ground turkey, beef, or sausage.
  • Cheese: Use a blend of cheddar and mozzarella, or try pepper jack for a spicy twist.
  • Soup: Replace cream of chicken with cream of mushroom or cheddar soup.
  • Add veggies: Mix in frozen peas, corn, or broccoli for added nutrition.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! Assemble the casserole, cover, and refrigerate up to 24 hours in advance. Add 10 extra minutes to the baking time if baking straight from the fridge.

Can I freeze it?
Yes. Assemble the casserole (without baking), wrap tightly, and freeze up to 3 months. Bake from frozen at 375°F for 50–60 minutes or until heated through.

Is it gluten-free?
Not as written, but you can use gluten-free ranch mix, cream of chicken soup, and tater tots to make it gluten-free.

How do I store leftovers?
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with a crisp side salad or roasted green beans to balance the richness.
  • Add a drizzle of ranch dressing or hot sauce on top for extra flavor.
  • This casserole also pairs well with coleslaw or steamed broccoli.
