Easy Wonton Soup Recipe

January 17, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

This Easy Wonton Soup is a comforting and flavorful classic that’s surprisingly simple to make at home. Tender, savory wontons simmered in a light, aromatic broth make for the perfect cozy meal. Whether you’re craving a quick dinner or a restaurant-quality treat, this recipe is ready in just 35 minutes and can be customized to suit your taste.

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 1/2 lb (225g) ground pork or chicken
  • 1/4 cup scallions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper (or black pepper)
  • 20–25 wonton wrappers

For the Broth:

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 2 cups baby spinach or bok choy
  • 1/2 cup sliced scallions (for garnish)

A savory broth and tender dumplings make this soup an irresistible blend of textures and flavors.

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Wonton Filling:
In a mixing bowl, combine ground pork or chicken, scallions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic powder, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until evenly combined.

2️⃣ Assemble the Wontons:

  • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface.
  • Spoon 1 teaspoon of the filling into the center.
  • Moisten the edges with water, fold the wrapper into a triangle, and press to seal.
  • Bring the two corners of the triangle together and press to create the classic wonton shape. Repeat until all the filling is used.

3️⃣ Prepare the Broth:
In a large pot, bring the chicken broth, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and white pepper to a gentle boil.

4️⃣ Cook the Wontons:
Carefully add the wontons to the boiling broth. Simmer for 5-6 minutes, or until the wontons float to the top and the filling is cooked through.

5️⃣ Add the Greens:
Stir in baby spinach or bok choy and cook for 1-2 minutes, just until wilted.

6️⃣ Serve:
Ladle the soup into bowls, ensuring each bowl gets several wontons. Garnish with sliced scallions and serve hot.

Tips & Variations

  1. Vegetarian Option: Use tofu or a mix of mushrooms for the filling and vegetable broth for the soup.
  2. Make Ahead: Assemble wontons ahead of time and freeze them on a baking sheet. Transfer to a freezer bag once frozen, and cook directly from frozen when needed.
  3. Add Veggies: Include mushrooms, carrots, or napa cabbage in the broth for added texture and flavor.
  4. Spicy Kick: Drizzle chili oil or add a splash of sriracha for extra heat.
  5. Keep it Fresh: Use fresh wonton wrappers for a softer texture, but frozen ones work well when thawed.
