Hanky Panky is a crowd-pleasing, retro appetizer that’s loved for its savory, cheesy goodness. Made with sausage, ground beef, and a melted cheese mixture, served on crispy rye bread, it’s a must-have for game days, potlucks, or holiday gatherings!
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground pork sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)
- 1 (16 oz) package Velveeta cheese, cubed
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 loaf cocktail rye bread

Instructions
- Cook the Meat:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.
- Melt the Cheese:
- Add the cubed Velveeta cheese to the skillet with the cooked meat. Stir constantly over low heat until the cheese is fully melted and combined with the meat mixture.
- Season:
- Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Assemble:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lay the rye bread slices on a baking sheet. Spoon about 1–2 tablespoons of the meat and cheese mixture onto each slice.
- Bake:
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges of the bread are crispy and the topping is bubbly.
- Serve:
- Serve warm and enjoy! These are best eaten fresh, but can be reheated in the oven if needed.
Notes
- For a spicy twist, use hot sausage or add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
- Leftover meat and cheese mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated for another round of appetizers.
- These can be prepared ahead of time: assemble the bread and topping, refrigerate, and bake when ready to serve.
