Why You’ll Love This Recipe

If you love French toast, then you have to try this Hawaiian Roll French Toast! Made with sweet, fluffy Hawaiian rolls, this dish takes classic French toast to the next level of deliciousness. The soft and buttery texture of Hawaiian rolls absorbs the rich, custardy batter perfectly, creating golden, crispy edges and a melt-in-your-mouth center.

This recipe is quick, easy, and perfect for a lazy weekend breakfast, a special brunch, or even a holiday morning treat. Serve it with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit for a decadent start to your day!

Ingredients

For the French Toast:

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls
  • 3 large eggs
  • 120ml whole milk
  • 50ml heavy cream
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for warmth)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for cooking)

For Toppings (Optional, but Recommended!):

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries
  • Whipped cream
  • Chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts work great!)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Custard

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Whisk until well combined and smooth.

Step 2: Prep the Hawaiian Rolls

  1. Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half, separating the tops and bottoms. (You can also leave them whole if you prefer extra fluffy centers!)
  2. If you want extra crispy edges, let the rolls sit out for 30 minutes to dry slightly.

Step 3: Soak the Rolls

  1. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a little melted butter.
  2. Dip each Hawaiian roll into the custard mixture, letting it soak for 5-10 seconds. Be careful not to oversoak, or they’ll become too soggy!

Step 4: Cook the French Toast

  1. Place the soaked rolls onto the hot pan.
  2. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  3. Repeat until all rolls are cooked, adding more butter as needed.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy!

  • Arrange the French toast rolls on a plate.
  • Drizzle with warm maple syrup and powdered sugar.
  • Top with fresh berries, whipped cream, or nuts for extra indulgence.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Hawaiian Roll French Toast

✨ Use slightly stale rolls – Day-old Hawaiian rolls absorb the custard better without getting too soggy.

✨ Don’t soak for too long – Hawaiian rolls are soft, so a quick dip is enough.

✨ Cook over medium heat – This ensures a golden crust without burning.

✨ Try air frying! – Cook at 180°C (350°F) for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through for a crispier texture.

✨ Make it ahead! – Soak the rolls the night before and refrigerate. Just cook in the morning for a quick breakfast!
