This Healthy Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Bake is a deliciously satisfying and wholesome meal that balances lean protein with nutrient-packed sweet potatoes. It’s perfect for family dinners, meal prep, or whenever you want a comforting dish that’s both healthy and hearty.

Layered with seasoned ground turkey, tender sweet potatoes, and vibrant veggies, this casserole comes together easily and bakes into a flavorful, filling dish. The natural sweetness of the potatoes complements the savory turkey, making every bite comforting and balanced.

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground turkey (lean, 93% lean recommended)
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup baby spinach, roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the turkey and veggies
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic; sauté for 2–3 minutes until translucent. Add ground turkey, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 7–8 minutes.
  3. Season the turkey mixture
Stir in red bell pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes. Add spinach and cook until wilted.
  4. Layer the bake
Spread half the sliced sweet potatoes evenly in the bottom of the baking dish. Spoon half the turkey mixture over the sweet potatoes. Repeat with remaining sweet potatoes and turkey mixture.
  5. Add broth and cheese
Pour chicken broth evenly over the top. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese if using.
  6. Bake the casserole
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Rest and serve
Let the bake rest for 5 minutes before serving.
