Few things are as comforting as a warm bowl of Homemade Wonton Soup. This traditional Chinese dish features delicate wontons filled with seasoned pork, gently simmered in a rich, aromatic broth. The result? A light yet satisfying soup that’s both cozy and full of authentic flavors.

Making wonton soup from scratch may seem intimidating, but it’s surprisingly simple and rewarding. With a few key ingredients and a little patience, you can create a dish that’s better than takeout. Whether enjoyed as a starter or a main course, this deliciously savory soup is a must-try for any home cook.

Ingredients (Measured in Grams)

For the Wontons:

  • 250g ground pork
  • 100g shrimp, finely chopped (optional, for added flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (5ml)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (5ml)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (3g)
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper (1g)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger (5g)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic (5g)
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped (10g)
  • 20-25 wonton wrappers

For the Broth:

  • 1 liter chicken broth (homemade or store-bought)
  • 500ml water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (15ml)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (5ml)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger (5g)
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (5g)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (3g), or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper (1g)
  • 1 green onion, sliced, for garnish
  • Fresh cilantro or bok choy (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Wonton Filling

  1. In a bowl, combine ground pork, chopped shrimp, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, white pepper, grated ginger, minced garlic, and chopped green onion.
  2. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Step 2: Fill and Fold the Wontons

  1. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Add 1 teaspoon of filling in the center.
  2. Moisten the edges with water, then fold it into a triangle, pressing the edges to seal.
  3. Bring the two bottom corners together, pressing firmly to create the classic wonton shape.
  4. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 3: Prepare the Broth

  1. In a large pot, heat chicken broth, water, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, salt, and white pepper over medium heat.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer and let the flavors meld for 5-7 minutes.

Step 4: Cook the Wontons

  1. Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Add the wontons and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until they float to the top.
  2. Transfer the cooked wontons into the broth using a slotted spoon.

Step 5: Assemble and Serve

  1. Ladle the hot broth into bowls and add wontons.
  2. Garnish with sliced green onions, fresh cilantro, or bok choy.
  3. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks for the Best Wonton Soup

✅ Use Fresh Wonton Wrappers – Fresh wrappers are more pliable and easier to work with than frozen ones.

✅ Don’t Overfill Wontons – A small amount of filling ensures they cook evenly and don’t burst.

✅ Seal Properly – Press the edges firmly to prevent them from opening during cooking.

✅ Cook Wontons Separately – Boiling them in water rather than directly in the broth keeps the soup clear.

✅ Customize Your Filling – Swap pork for chicken, turkey, or mushrooms for a vegetarian option.

✅ Enhance the Broth – Add a splash of black vinegar or chili oil for extra depth.

What to Serve with Wonton Soup?

???? Steamed Rice – A simple side that complements the broth’s lightness.

???? Stir-Fried Vegetables – Bok choy, snow peas, or Chinese broccoli are great options.

???? Fried Rice or Lo Mein – For a heartier meal, pair with a noodle or rice dish.

???? Spring Rolls or Dumplings – A crunchy, flavorful addition.
