Description: Spicy, sweet, and packed with flavor, Hot Honey Chicken Bowls are the perfect combination of crispy, juicy chicken, and a deliciously spicy-sweet honey glaze. This dish comes together quickly for a weeknight dinner or a weekend treat, featuring tender chicken thighs or breasts coated in a crispy batter, then drizzled with a homemade hot honey sauce. Serve it over a bed of rice or your favorite grain, topped with fresh vegetables and a sprinkle of cilantro for the perfect balance of heat and sweetness. These Hot Honey Chicken Bowls are sure to become a family favorite!

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice level)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Hot Honey Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (such as Sriracha or your favorite spicy sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)

For the Bowl:

  • 2 cups cooked rice (white, brown, or jasmine)
  • 1 cup sliced cucumber
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • Lime wedges (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk together.
  2. Coat the Chicken: Dip each chicken thigh into the egg mixture, then dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture, pressing gently to coat each piece evenly.
  3. Fry the Chicken: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the coated chicken thighs to the pan, being careful not to overcrowd them. Fry the chicken for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165ยฐF/74ยฐC). Remove from the skillet and set aside to rest.
  4. Make the Hot Honey Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the honey, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until the sauce is warm and well combined, about 2-3 minutes. Taste and adjust the level of heat by adding more hot sauce or red pepper flakes, if desired.
  5. Assemble the Bowls: To assemble, divide the cooked rice between 4 bowls. Slice the fried chicken into strips and place it on top of the rice. Drizzle the hot honey sauce generously over the chicken.
  6. Add Toppings: Top the chicken bowls with sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. Serve with lime wedges on the side for a fresh burst of flavor.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy the perfect balance of heat, sweetness, and crunch in every bite!

Tips & Tricks:

  • Adjust the Spice: If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of cayenne pepper in the chicken batter and use less hot sauce in the honey sauce.
  • Make It a Meal Prep Option: You can prep the chicken and sauce ahead of time. Just store the fried chicken and sauce separately, and assemble the bowls when ready to serve.
  • Crispy Chicken: For extra crispy chicken, use panko breadcrumbs mixed into the flour for the batter.
  • Toppings Variations: Feel free to add additional toppings like avocado, roasted sweet potatoes, or corn for extra flavor and texture.
  • Rice Alternatives: You can swap out the rice for quinoa, couscous, or cauliflower rice for a lighter or gluten-free option.
