How to Make Bread

January 30, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

Description

This basic bread recipe is perfect for beginners! It requires just a few pantry staples and minimal effort. Whether you want to make sandwich bread, dinner rolls, or rustic artisan loaves, this versatile dough is the foundation for many delicious variations.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose or bread flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast or instant yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 1 tbsp sugar or honey (to activate the yeast)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar (or honey), and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy. (If it doesn’t foam, the yeast might be inactive—try again with fresh yeast.)

Step 2: Make the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  2. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil (or butter). Stir until a rough dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (If using a stand mixer, knead with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.)

Step 3: First Rise (Proofing)

  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Shape & Second Rise

  1. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or rolls.
  2. Place the dough in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet. Cover and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes.

Step 5: Bake the Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes (for a loaf) or 15-20 minutes (for rolls) until golden brown.
  3. Tap the bottom of the bread—if it sounds hollow, it’s done!

Step 6: Cool & Enjoy

  1. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

  • With Butter & Jam: A classic, simple treat.
  • As a Sandwich Base: Use it for grilled cheese, avocado toast, or club sandwiches.
  • For Dipping: Enjoy with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
