How to Make Oobleck: Fun & Simple Science Experiment

December 5, 2024 by el hassan Leave a Comment

Oobleck is a fascinating non-Newtonian fluid made from cornstarch and water. It’s fun for kids to play with because it behaves like both a solid and a liquid, depending on how you interact with it. This easy science experiment also offers endless opportunities for creativity, like adding food coloring for a spooky Witch’s Brew! Keep reading to learn how to make this fun and educational activity.

Oobleck Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this oobleck recipe:

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring (optional)

Note: Cornstarch may also be referred to as cornflour. Be sure to use white cornflour for the best results!

How Long Does Oobleck Last?

Oobleck is best used the day it’s made. After that, it begins to degrade. To dispose of it, simply let it dry out overnight. The next day, break it into small pieces and toss it into your green bin. If you want to clean it out of a container, mix it with hot water and stir.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Oobleck

  1. Mix the ingredients
Combine 2 cups of cornstarch and 1 cup of water into a large bowl. Stir until the mixture forms the thick, gooey consistency of oobleck.
  2. Add food coloring (optional)
If you’d like to give your oobleck a fun twist, add food coloring to the water before mixing it with the cornstarch. Green makes for a perfect Witch’s Brew!
  3. Adjust the consistency
If your oobleck is too watery, add a little more cornstarch. If it’s too thick, add more water. Keep experimenting until it has the perfect consistency.Tip: If you want your oobleck to behave like a solid when you press it, hit it with a spoon or potato masher quickly. It will bounce back and feel firm. Slowly dip your spoon in, and it will flow like a liquid!

Activity Ideas & Suggestions

  • Witch’s Brew: Make multiple batches and add some small Halloween-themed toys like spiders and eyeballs. Pour it into a cauldron for a spooky sensory play experience!
  • Oobleck Ball: Form the oobleck into a ball with your hands. Then, let it melt and ooze away as soon as you stop applying pressure. This is the magic of Oobleck!

This is a perfect Halloween activity or rainy-day fun that introduces kids to fascinating scientific principles in an exciting way. And don’t forget—this is just one of the many slime and science activities you can try!
