Instant Pot Sausage Gravy

January 1, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

This Instant Pot Sausage Gravy is a delicious, time-saving twist on a Southern classic. Perfectly seasoned sausage in a creamy, peppery gravy is the ultimate comfort food. Serve over warm biscuits for a hearty breakfast or brunch!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper (or more to taste)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Sausage:
    • Turn the Instant Pot to the Sauté setting. Add the sausage and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a spoon. Do not drain the grease unless there’s an excessive amount.
  2. Add Butter and Flour:
    • Add the butter to the cooked sausage and stir until melted. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the sausage. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  3. Add Milk and Seasonings:
    • Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
  4. Cook the Gravy:
    • Cancel the Sauté setting and switch to Pressure Cook (Manual) on Low Pressure for 2 minutes. Seal the lid and set the valve to “Sealing.”
  5. Quick Release and Stir:
    • Once the timer is up, perform a Quick Release to release the pressure. Open the lid and stir the gravy well. If it’s too thick, add a splash of milk to reach your desired consistency.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the sausage gravy over warm biscuits, toast, or even mashed potatoes. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a spicier gravy, use hot breakfast sausage or add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding milk if needed to thin the gravy.
  • This recipe can also be made using ground turkey sausage for a lighter version.
