Meat and Potato Casserole

January 9, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

This hearty meat and potato casserole is a comforting classic that combines layers of seasoned ground beef, creamy mashed potatoes, and melty cheese. Perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings, this easy one-dish meal is satisfying, flavorful, and always a hit at the dinner table.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (fresh or store-bought)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat, then season with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Prepare Mashed Potatoes: If using fresh mashed potatoes, mix them with milk and a pinch of salt for a creamy consistency.
  4. Assemble the Casserole: Spread the cooked beef evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer the mashed potatoes on top, smoothing them out with a spatula. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the potatoes.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot with a side of vegetables or a simple salad.

Tips for the Best Meat and Potato Casserole

  • Add Veggies: Mix in frozen peas, carrots, or corn with the beef layer for extra nutrition.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Bake when ready to serve.
  • Switch the Cheese: Try Monterey Jack, mozzarella, or a sharp cheddar blend for a different flavor.
  • Spice It Up: Add a dash of hot sauce or chili powder to the beef for a slight kick.
