These golden-brown, crispy bites are stuffed with gooey mozzarella cheese and served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping — what’s not to love? Whether you’re preparing them as a party appetizer, a game-day snack, or just a fun treat for family movie night, they’re always a hit.

The best part? They’re easier to make than you might think, and you can even make them ahead of time to save time on busy days. So grab your favorite mozzarella cheese, and let’s dive into the deliciousness of homemade mozzarella sticks.

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks (or mozzarella blocks cut into sticks)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt

  1. Prepare the cheese: If using string cheese, cut each stick in half to make shorter pieces. If using a block of mozzarella, slice it into sticks about 1 inch thick.
  2. Set up the breading station: In one shallow dish, place the flour. In a second dish, beat the eggs with a tablespoon of water. In a third dish, combine the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  3. Coat the cheese sticks: Dip each mozzarella stick first in the flour, coating it completely. Next, dip it in the beaten egg, then coat it with the breadcrumb mixture. For extra crispiness, repeat this process — dip in the egg and breadcrumbs a second time.
  4. Freeze the sticks: Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes. Freezing them helps the cheese stay inside when frying.
  5. Heat the oil: In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). You need enough oil to fully submerge the mozzarella sticks.
  6. Fry the sticks: Fry the mozzarella sticks in batches for 1–2 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Be sure not to overcrowd the pot, as this will lower the temperature of the oil.
  7. Drain and serve: Remove the sticks from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
