Swedish Meatball Recipe

December 24, 2024 by el hassan Leave a Comment

Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor, this Swedish Meatball Recipe is the ultimate comfort food. Perfectly seasoned meatballs in a luscious cream sauce—serve them with mashed potatoes or noodles for a meal everyone will love!

Ingredients (Serves 6)

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for frying

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
    • Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Cook the Meatballs:
    • Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides (about 6-8 minutes). Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Stir in the heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. Combine Meatballs and Sauce:
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 10 minutes until heated through and fully cooked. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Tips

  • Tender Meatballs: Don’t overmix the meatball mixture; it will make them tough.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the meatballs in advance and freeze them. Cook directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a celiac-friendly meal.
