The Best Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

March 5, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

Scalloped potatoes are the ultimate comfort food, with thinly sliced potatoes layered in a rich, creamy sauce and baked until golden and bubbly. This classic side dish is perfect for family dinners, holiday gatherings, or any meal that needs an extra touch of indulgence.

Unlike au gratin potatoes (which include cheese in every layer), traditional scalloped potatoes focus on the luxurious creaminess of a buttery, garlic-infused sauce. Of course, if you’re a cheese lover, you can always add a little extra!

This easy homemade recipe delivers tender, perfectly baked potatoes in a velvety, flavorful sauce with just the right amount of seasoning. It’s simple, elegant, and always a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

(Serves 6)

For the Scalloped Potatoes:

  • 1 kg (about 4 medium) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 3mm thick)
  • 30g (2 tbsp) unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 30g (2 tbsp) all-purpose flour
  • 500ml (2 cups) whole milk
  • 250ml (1 cup) heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, adds depth)

Optional Cheese Topping (for a twist):

  • 100g grated cheddar or Gruyère cheese (for a cheesy baked finish)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or mandoline for even cooking. Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Creamy Sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for 1 minute to cook out the raw taste.
  4. Gradually add the milk and cream, whisking constantly to create a smooth sauce.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, and nutmeg. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Layer the Potatoes & Sauce

  1. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  2. Pour half of the creamy sauce over the potatoes, spreading evenly.
  3. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce, ensuring all slices are coated.

Step 4: Bake to Perfection

  1. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil, and if using, sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
  3. Bake uncovered for 20-25 more minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbling, and the potatoes are tender.
  4. Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10 minutes before serving.
