The Best Sugar Cookie Icing

Create beautifully decorated cookies with this easy and versatile sugar cookie icing! It dries smooth and shiny, making it ideal for intricate designs or a simple glaze. Sweet, creamy, and customizable, this icing is perfect for holidays, parties, or any cookie-decorating occasion.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2-3 tbsp milk (adjust for consistency)
  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla or almond extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix Base Icing: In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, corn syrup, and extract until smooth. Add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, to reach your desired consistency.
  2. Check Consistency: For outlining, the icing should hold its shape; for flooding, it should flow easily but not run off the edge of the cookie.
  3. Color and Decorate: Divide icing into bowls and add food coloring as desired. Transfer to piping bags for detailed designs or use a spoon to spread over cookies.
  4. Let Dry: Allow decorated cookies to dry at room temperature for 8-12 hours or until icing is completely set.

Tips for Perfect Icing

  • Sift powdered sugar: Prevents clumps for a smoother icing.
  • Use corn syrup: Adds a glossy finish and helps icing set.
  • Seal tightly: Cover bowls with plastic wrap while working to prevent icing from hardening.
