Tiramisu: The Classic Italian Dessert

Tiramisu is a timeless Italian dessert that combines layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers with a rich and creamy mascarpone filling. Finished with a dusting of cocoa powder, this no-bake treat is indulgent yet light, making it perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re serving it at a dinner party or treating yourself, this easy homemade tiramisu is sure to impress!


Ingredients

For the Cream Layer:

  • 3 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 8 oz (225g) mascarpone cheese, softened
  • ¾ cup (180ml) heavy whipping cream

For the Espresso Mixture:

  • 1 cup (240ml) brewed espresso or strong coffee, cooled
  • 2 tbsp coffee liqueur (optional, such as Kahlúa or Marsala wine)

For Assembly:

  • 24-30 ladyfinger biscuits (Savoiardi)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Mascarpone Cream

  1. In a heatproof bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar together.
  2. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler method) and whisk continuously for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Once cooled, mix in the mascarpone cheese until smooth.

Step 2: Whip the Cream

  1. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  2. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until well combined.

Step 3: Assemble the Tiramisu

  1. In a shallow dish, combine the espresso and coffee liqueur.
  2. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the espresso mixture (don’t soak too long, or they’ll become too soggy).
  3. Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers at the bottom of a 9×9-inch dish.
  4. Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the ladyfingers.
  5. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers, then spread the remaining mascarpone cream on top.

Step 4: Chill & Serve

  1. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (overnight for best flavor).
  2. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.
  3. Slice and enjoy!

Saving & Storage

  • Refrigeration: Store tiramisu covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: You can freeze tiramisu for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
